icons who supported peoples of Palestine and Western Sahara

As we are in a period where the peoples of Palestine and Western Sahara are fighting for their liberation, some people are trying to separate the two struggles. So I have decided to write a thread to present several anti-imperialist icons who supported both causes.

In his first speech at the UN after his release from prison in February 1990, Nelson Mandela (the main character in the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa) expressed his solidarity to the people of Palestine and Western Sahara.

The president of Burkina Faso at the beginning of the 80’s, known for his unwavering Pan-Africanism and anti-imperialism, dedicated a part of his speech to Palestine at the UN General Assembly on October 4th 1984.

In the same speech, Thomas Sankara expressed his firm support for the Sahrawi people. Indeed, he stated : « I’m firmly convinced that nothing could prevent them [the sahrawi people] from freeing the entirety of their country. »

Fidel Castro visited Palestine multiple times and supported its armed resistance (he stated in 1967 : « Revolutionaries didn’t choose armed struggle as the best path, it’s the path the oppressors imposed on the people »). This article summarizes his commitment to Palestine. https://t.co/MXSGbwqBQb

He was also a staunch supporter of the Sahrawi people’s struggle. As reported by the Cuban presidency, he declared during the 6th Non-Aligned Summit in September 1979 : « Cuba […] expresses its total support for the independence of the Sahrawi people, as the occupation of its territory is entirely unfounded, and its aspiration for free self-determination is undeniably right. » https://t.co/97IR7v4upL

He was the palestinian revolutionary leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine after Ghassan Kanafani’s death. He visited Sahrawi refugee camps in 1979 and he expressed his support to the SADR 🇪🇭 on behalf of the Palestinian people.

President of Venezuela from 1999 to 2013 and a key figure in the anti-imperialist struggle in South America, he strongly condemned Israeli criminal policies in a public conference in 2010.

Hugo Chavez was also firmly on the SADR’s side in its struggle against the moroccan occupation. That’s what he explained to a Sahrawi student in a public conference held in Caracas during the cultural festival with African peoples in 2009.

I wrote this whole thread to make one point : the sahrawi cause is a decolonial struggle as much as the palestinian one.

Regardless of your opinions about the people mentioned in this thread, they come from different continents, speak different languages, sometimes have nothing to do with the Arab world, yet support the Sahrawi people as they support the Palestinian people.

Therefore, as consistent anti-colonialists, we must support both struggles the same way.
